The Texarkana Arkansas Police Dept. would like to announce the safe return of one of the agency’s certified law enforcement officers, Detective John David Cowart.
Detective Cowart accepted employment with the Texarkana Arkansas Police Dept. in June of 2001. In addition, to being a Detective in the criminal investigation division, he also holds another rank as a Major with the United States Marine Corps, assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines.
In September 2006, Major Cowart left Texarkana to begin active duty with his company, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In September 2007, Major Cowart was deployed to Haditha, Al-Anbar Iraq. His mission was to interdict Al-Qeada in Iraq and to establish the Iraqi police in the area. Major Cowart’s mission was successful. Sixty insurgents were captured, including 2 that were classified as mid-level risk, along with four Iraqi police stations established. Major Cowart advised, “In establishing the Iraqi police stations, I modeled the Texarkana Arkansas Police Dept. community policing policies that Chief Robert Harrison had established here in Texarkana.” Major Cowart commanded approximately 250 Marines, 6 being from the Texarkana area and was thankful to advise they had no casualties. “In my mind all of the prayers of people back here for us were a key factor in our success”, Major Cowart stated.
In April of 2008, Major Cowart returned home to his wife, daughter, and son, and is again serving with the Texarkana Arkansas Police Dept.
