Police have been informed by the Federal Trade Commission that several internet "phishing" scams pertaining to hurricane Katrina have already begun to surface.
Websites have been circulating that provide false links to Red Cross donation sites. These scams have been found as an embedded link or attachment file on an e-mail that solicits donations for the Red Cross. Although no local complaints have been reported at this time, it is suggested that internet users go directly to the Red Cross website for information on making donations, or call the local Red Cross office. The Red Cross is not soliciting online donations and internet users are cautioned to not release any account information or passwords while online.
