Re: Interview Stop Turns into Deadly Situation for Officer

39 years-old Dwight Jackson of Texarkana Arkansas of arrested at 3:55am this morning on charges ranging from Fleeing to Aggravated Assault of a Police Officer. The incident began when Officer Les Munn spotted Jackson walking in a residential neighborhood of 33rd street. Officers had received recent calls from residents in the area about mischief’s and thefts occurring in the early morning hours.

Officer Munn stopped Jackson to inquired about his reasons for being in the neighborhood at such an early hour. During an exchange Officer Munn located drug paraphernalia in a bag Jackson was carrying. When Officer Munn attempted to arrest Jackson for the illegal material, Jackson resisted and a struggle ensued. Jackson broke free of Officers Munn’s grasp and fled. During the struggles Officer Munn repeatedly ordered Jackson to stop while he chased Jackson on foot. Officer Munn stopped Jackson after a few seconds and a second struggle began. Officer Munn used chemical spray or “pepper spray” in an attempt to subdue Jackson. Jackson continued to fight Officer Munn and at one point Jackson reached for Officer Munn’s service weapon or pistol. Officer Munn was able to prevent Jackson from getting his pistol. Jackson fled again and Officer Munn was able to stop Jackson by trapping him along a fence line. This time Jackson turned and lunged toward Officer Munn but Officer Munn sidestepped Jackson’s attack and Jackson once again fled. Officer Munn had lost his flashlight and chemical spray during the struggles and chase. Officer Munn stooped Jackson a third time in a creek near the Jefferson and 35th street. During this struggle Officer Munn and Jackson landed in the creek and Officer Munn lost his grasp of the suspect. At this point Jackson picked up a concrete rock and threatened Officer Munn while he held the rock over above his head, in a throwing motion. Officer Munn attempted to talk Jackson into dropping the rock while he held him at bay with his service weapon. A few seconds passed and two other officers arrived to assist. Jackson still refused to surrender. When another officer distracted Jackson, Officer Munn seized the opportunity and physically confronted him long enough for all three officers to subdue and restrain Jackson.
