On Thursday (01/08/04) the Texarkana Arkansas Police received a call in regards to a suspicious telephone call. On Saturday (01/03/04) a man purporting to be with Medicare in Arkadelphia began asking questions concerning personal information. The elderly couple that had received the call refused to give the man any personal information and requested that the man identify himself and his telephone number. The man refused to give the couple any information.
The couple had recently attended an AARP conference at the local YWCA where the topic of Identity Theft was presented by the Attorney Generals Office, United Postal Services, and The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department. The couple believed that the caller was attempting to steal their identity and called 911.
The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department would like to remind everyone that unless you initiate the telephone call, do not release personal information over the telephone. If you should receive telephone solicitations of personal information, and believe the call is fraudulent, do not release any information and call 911.
