The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department would like to inform citizens of a phone scam circulating the Texarkana area. Recently we received a report from a senior citizen who received a phone call from an unidentified male who claimed to be her grandson. The individual advised the citizen that he had gotten into an accident in Miami, Florida and had been arrested for DWI. The unknown suspect told her he needed $1,800.00 in order to be released from jail and that his attorney would be calling to make arrangements to send the money.
A short time later a second unknown male called the victim claiming to be an attorney. The second suspect carefully explained to her how to wire the money from the MoneyGram store located inside the Arkansas side Walmart. She was instructed to wire the money to an address in the Dominican Republic.
After a few days the victim once again received a call from the individual claiming to be her grandson. This time the male suspect stated he was at a hotel room but his attorney had informed him that the other parties involved in the purported accident wanted a total of $4,800.00 in order to settle property and medical losses. The suspect continued to say the people involved in the accident were only in the United States on business and would be leaving in a few days, therefore were willing to expedite the situation.
Ultimately the victim completed two more wire transfers totaling $4,800.00. The final transfers were sent to an address in Chile.
This type of scam is reported to police frequently and all reports have involved similar circumstances. If you receive a suspicious phone call of anyone asking for money, please take the time to investigate thoroughly in order to prevent yourself from becoming a victim.
Conduct a basic investigation of your own by contacting several family members first hand to ensure the validity of the phone call. You can always call the police with information and ask questions about any suspicious activity.
