Early Wednesday morning at 2:00a.m, Officers responded to the 2800 block of Sanderson Lane in reference to a burglary in progress. As officers approached the residence, they observed two unknown males in the driveway, one pushing a cart towards a parked SUV. The two suspects observed the officers presence and quickly fled on foot. Officers chased the suspects around the house and into the backyard where they then observed an additional suspect fleeing from them. Officers continued to pursue all three suspects through several yards and over fences on foot until the suspects split up when around the area of Jan Place. Officer Lloyd Douglas captured one of the suspects, later identified as Andrew Rivas, W/M 22yoa, of Texarkana, Texas, as he attempted to jump yet another fence. Approximately two blocks away, Sgt. Ray Gooch located the second suspect, Adrin Espada, B/M 28yoa, also of Texarkana, Texas. The third suspect was not located.
While assisting officers chasing the suspects, Officer Les Moody observed a woman, later identified as Lavinia Clingan, W/F 64yoa, shouting for help. Ms. Clingan stated that three unknown suspects were still inside her residence and had her husband tied up. During this time, Officer Douglas was still in foot pursuit and was broadcasting information over the radio of the suspect’s location.
Inside the residence, officers located a female, later identified as Janice Irvin, W/F 62 yoa, locked inside a bedroom. Irvin was escorted outside with Ms. Clingan to speak with officers. During this time, a 911 call was dispatched to Green Oaks Street in reference to a male requesting assistance. That male was later identified as victim, James Clingan, W/M 65 yoa.
As the investigation continued it was determined that Ms. Clingan was awakened by the sound of a loud crash and immediately knew someone was breaking into the residence. Ms. Clingan rushed to her sister, Janice Irvin’s, bedroom to alert her of the situation, when she was grabbed by an unknown suspect. The suspect put a gun to her head and forced her into the room where her husband, James Clingan, was lying on the floor. The suspects beat Mr. Clingan and tied his wrists up before leaving the bedroom. At that time, Ms. Clingan fled the residence though the bedroom window to get help. Upon hearing the commotion inside the residence and hearing her sister screaming for her, Irvin immediately went into a bathroom, locked the door, and called 911 for police assistance.
Officers located Mr. Clingan at a residence on Green Oaks Street. Mr. Clingan had a significant amount of blood on his head and body and was transported to St. Michaels for head injuries.
Officers located two loaded pistols during the incident. Other evidence collected included ski masks, gloves, flashlights and several rounds of live ammunition.
Both Rivas and Espada was arrested for aggravated residential burglary and transported to the Bi-State Jail.
This case is ongoing and two additional arrests are forthcoming.
